How long does a granite tombstone last?

Gepubliseer 21 September 2026

A good granite tombstone lasts for generations, a century or more. Granite is hard, dense and slow to weather. South African research on gravestones notes that granite and gabbro are preferred here because they outlast softer stones such as limestone by a wide margin.

How long the stone survives and how long the tombstone looks the way it did on installation day are two different questions. In South Africa there is a third question, and it is about theft.

Three kinds of life

Structural life

Will the granite stay in one piece? For many generations, yes. Weathering is gradual: the polish loses some shine, edges soften, engraved areas change slowly. Inscriptions in granite stay legible well past a hundred years.

Visual life

Will it look the same? Not exactly. Sun, rain, wind and dust change the surface over decades.

Practical life

Will the memorial still be there in 50 or 100 years? In some South African cemeteries, theft and vandalism are a more immediate risk than weather.

What happens to the engraving

A granite tombstone is polished, and the names, dates and pictures are cut or sandblasted into that polish. The engraving is permanent in the sense that it is not a sticker. But the engraved area is no longer polished stone, and over the years it weathers differently from the surface around it, so the contrast changes. How fast depends on the granite, the depth of the cut, the direction the stone faces and the local conditions. Porous granites also stain more readily. Engraving does not disappear after a few years. It stays readable for decades, but it does change.

A sandblasted portrait is a special case. It is a picture made by removing polish to create tones, and its definition shifts as the stone weathers. A ceramic photograph fired into glass does not depend on an engraved surface staying the same.

Theft

Granite has value beyond the memorial. A good slab can be lifted, ground down, polished and used again. Stolen headstones have been reported in South African cemeteries, so security is a real part of the longevity conversation.

Printed glass is different. The photograph cannot be polished off and replaced with a new engraving. The glass has little value as material, so it is a poor target for anyone who wants to reuse it.

Does granite fade?

The colour of the stone is mineral and stable. What changes is the surface. The polish is a physical finish, not a coating, and years outdoors make it less mirror-like. Weathering, dirt and biological growth can alter the look of the stone.

The lettering

The cut letters last for decades. Any paint, enamel or gold leaf used to make them stand out has a much shorter life in sun and weather and eventually needs redoing. That is why an old granite stone can have crisp lettering with no colour left in it.

So how long?

Think in terms of 50 years, then 100, then several centuries for the stone itself. Expect the appearance to change along the way. And in South Africa, take physical security seriously: a tombstone cannot last a hundred years if it is taken after twenty.

Granite and glass together

A granite-and-glass memorial keeps granite for the structure and adds a glass panel for the photograph. With digital ceramic printing the image is fused into the glass, so it does not rely on an engraved surface staying the same, and the glass has no resale value as raw material. Granite and glass both last. They do different jobs. The useful question is how you want the memorial to look and to age, and what happens to it if circumstances change.

Meer gidse

  • How much does a tombstone cost in South Africa?

Granite headstones start around R5 000, traditional tombstones cost more, and custom memorials can pass R80 000. What drives the price, and where glass fits in.

  • Granite vs glass tombstones: which is better?

Glass does not replace granite. It replaces the engraved panel with a full-colour photograph. What each option costs, how strong each is, and who should choose which.

  • Do photographs on tombstones fade?

Surface prints fade. Digital ceramic printing fires the photograph into the glass. How the process works, what it resists, and why we quote a conservative 20 years.

  • What should you put on a tombstone?

Name, dates and a few words at least. With photographic glass you can add their face in colour, the things they loved, and a QR code to an online memorial.
