Granite vs glass tombstones: which is better?

Gepubliseer 21 September 2026

This is not an either-or choice. A glass memorial still stands on granite. The glass takes the place of the granite panel that would normally carry the names, dates and a sandblasted photograph, or it is added alongside it. The fair comparison is a granite-only tombstone against a granite-and-glass one.

Both last. The difference is appearance, personalisation and cost.

Granite only

Granite has been used for memorials for generations, and for good reason. It is affordable, strong, easy to manufacture, comes in many colours and finishes, and every cemetery and monument mason knows it. Names, dates, verses, symbols and photographs are engraved or sandblasted into the polished surface.

The limit is photographs. A portrait sandblasted into granite is a picture made of stone texture. It can be beautiful, but it is monochrome and bound by the colour of the stone.

Granite and glass

A glass panel reproduces a full-colour photograph. The person appears the way the family remembers them: in their own clothes, with their family, at a place they loved. The glass can be a small feature next to a granite headstone, a photographic panel set into the granite, or the whole headstone panel. It can hold one photograph or a collage of photographs, artwork and text.

An old black-and-white television did its job. A modern colour screen shows detail the old set could not, and it costs more. Memorials have moved the same way.

Is glass stronger than granite?

No. Both are strong, and both break under enough force. Granite cracks if it is dropped or hit hard. Glass shatters if it is struck hard enough. Choose on how you want the memorial to look, not on the idea that one material cannot break.

Weight

Thick or laminated glass is heavy. It has to be allowed for in the design, the transport and the installation. That is one reason a granite-and-glass memorial should be designed, made and installed by one team rather than treated as a panel you bolt on later.

Cost

Granite only is cheaper. Glass adds material and processing, and printing a photograph into glass needs equipment a granite yard does not have. If budget comes first, choose granite. If a colour photograph and a personal design matter more, the extra is worth paying.

Glass cannot be re-engraved

An engraved granite slab can be ground down, polished and engraved again. That gives it a second value as a piece of stone. Printed glass cannot be polished down and reused in the same way. It has value as a memorial and very little as raw material, which makes it a poor target for anyone looking to remove an inscription and resell the stone.

How each one ages

Granite is durable, but the engraved areas are no longer polished, and over decades they weather differently from the surrounding stone. The contrast of a sandblasted portrait changes with them. A glass photograph does not depend on an engraved surface, so it ages differently. No outdoor material is immune to weather, and the quality of the glass, the printing and the installation all matter.

Which to choose

Choose granite only if cost matters most, you want a traditional look with engraved lettering, and you do not need a large colour photograph.

Consider granite and glass if you want a large, detailed colour photograph, freedom with pictures and artwork, a memorial that shows the person’s personality, and you are prepared to pay more for it.

Granite is the foundation of both. Glass is another medium on top of it. Neither is better for every family.

  • How much does a tombstone cost in South Africa?

Granite headstones start around R5 000, traditional tombstones cost more, and custom memorials can pass R80 000. What drives the price, and where glass fits in.

  • Do photographs on tombstones fade?

Surface prints fade. Digital ceramic printing fires the photograph into the glass. How the process works, what it resists, and why we quote a conservative 20 years.

  • How long does a granite tombstone last?

The stone lasts a century or more. The polish, the engraving and the painted lettering change sooner, and in South Africa theft can matter more than weather.

  • What should you put on a tombstone?

Name, dates and a few words at least. With photographic glass you can add their face in colour, the things they loved, and a QR code to an online memorial.
